Class of 2016 Reading
All members of the Hood College Class of 2016 will read “Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China” by Leslie Chang. China has 150 million migrant workers—the largest migration in human history, most of whom are women. The author is one of the few who have penetrated the lives of those who leave their homes to work in China’s sprawling factory cities, laboring countless hours to provide us with the manufactured goods we take for granted. Chang uses the experiences of these “factory girls” to explore how the mass movement from rural villages to cities is remaking individual lives and transforming Chinese society.About The Author
Leslie T. Chang lived in China for a decade as a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, specializing in stories that explored how socioeconomic change is transforming institutions and individuals. A graduate of Harvard University with a degree in American History and Literature, Chang has also worked as a journalist in the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. She was raised outside New York City by immigrant parents who forced her to attend Saturday-morning Chinese school, for which she is now grateful.
